Community-Based Spanish 101
Course Taught By: Annie Robinson, PhD
Course ID: 2796
Meeting Times: Pending
Course Description: The Beginning Spanish sequence aims to provide practical language skills for meaningful communication in real situations, with the goal of connecting with the diverse Spanish-speaking populations around the world and in the US. Three quarter sequence. Span 1001 is designed for students with no previous Spanish experience. Students with more than 2 years of high school Spanish or who grew up in a Spanish-speaking environment must take the placement exam and enroll in a higher-level.
Please note that this section has a unique approach to language learning by incorporating the history and culture of Denver’s Hispano, Chicanx, and Latinx populations into the coursework. While the main outcome of the sequence is to acquire a proficient level of Spanish, the cultural component of the course will require students to attend one event in the community and create one project based on the experience. Profe Robinson will provide students with a list of events each quarter and will outline the expectations of the project at the beginning of the course. This place-based feature of the class will strengthen students’ understanding of the history of Spanish in Colorado and will open the doors for further community engagement while studying at DU.
