Course Description: Cities are increasingly interested in investing in the arts to foster local economies and identities. “Creative cities” have designated creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. And the “creative economy” has become an important way to justify public support for the arts. The City of Denver itself has a nationally recognized model for arts funding. But what constitutes a creative city? How are they made and sustained? Which artistic projects are funded? Why? What happens when economic growth become a dominant justification for arts funding? This course explores Denver as a creative city.
